Dating refers to the American custom of courtship in which a male and female meet each other with various social, emotional, and sexual purposes in mind.

Dating service: A business established to put single persons in contact with suitable partners for dating, courtship, and marriage. Dating services may use computerized personal profiles or personal interviews and arranged introductions to match suitable couples.
