Kurt Freund

(1914-1996)

Kurt Freund

Kurt Freund was born in Czechoslovakia.

A notable sexologist, Freund conducted much of his pioneering work while in Prague between 1945 and 1968. His main areas of interest were homosexuality and sexual arousal.

Freund was among the first experts to conclude that attempts to alter sexual orientation by means of behavior therapy or psychotherapy were futile.

In the 1960s, for example, when virtually all psychologists and psychiatrists agreed that homosexuality was caused by early childhood experiences, he was already arguing that the data more strongly suggested prenatal biological influences.

Kurt Freund was suffering from lung cancer and committed suicide at his home in Toronto. He was 82.
